Wa Wa Women – Songs for the Soul

OUR PROJECT 

I have had the privilege of running singing circles with Wa Wa Women in Uppingham for almost exactly a year and together we decided we would like to mark the occasion by raising some money for charity.  When I first suggested the idea of recording some of our songs, our Wa Wa Women were a bit taken back to say the least as performing is not a regular part of what we do! However because our confidence has grown in the last year, and because we decided to do it as a team, everybody stepped on board and agreed to offer their voice to our recording project. I must add, we are also blessed to have the technical know-how in one of our singers who runs a music business and whose husband is a music technician, this made our goal far more achievable and we couldn’t have done it without Ria and Danny at Rocky Road Music.

OUR CHARITY 

Through our singing circle, we have all been lucky enough to experience first-hand the benefits that singing can bring.  We have created new connections and built a community, been able to release emotions in a safe space and felt the positive effects singing has had on our physicality and mental health.  It only seemed right therefore for our offering to feed back into the singing community and enable others who have not yet had the opportunity to experience some of the magic of singing in circle. The charity we have chosen to support is Singing Mamas which are a non-profit organisation working in the UK to help improve women’s wellbeing through singing.

I completed my Singing Mamas training in April 2022 and so have been lucky enough to experience first-hand what this incredible organisation is all about – working at grass-roots level and getting women singing. Much of the focus and funding is driven by alarming statistics and evidence that suicide is the leading cause of death in women during pregnancy and for one year afterwards. Singing has been proven to reduce symptoms of post-natal depression faster than usual forms of treatment and can now even be prescribed thanks to the work that Singing Mamas do. It is by no means just new mothers who benefit from this work. Kate Valentine who founded the organisation now leads a network of over 100 women who work in their communities as song-sharers.
